PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP - Voter Registration Requirements

If this is your first time registering to vote in Arizona your voter registration form must also include proof of citizenship, or you will be registered as a Federal Only voter. This means that you will only be eligible to vote for candidates for federal office (U.S. President, U.S. Representative, and U.S. Senate.) You will not be eligible to vote in any statewide elections or for any local candidates or any propositions.
If you submit any voter registration form without providing proof of citizenship, we will attempt to obtain a driver’s license or Arizona state ID number from the Arizona State Motor Vehicle (MVD) system.

If a number is obtained, we will apply it to your record and confirm with MVD that you are a citizen. Once confirmation of citizenship is received, you will immediately have your status changed to a full ballot voter.
If the MVD match shows you are not a citizen, you will immediately be cancelled.
If there is no match in the MVD system, you will remain a Federal Only voter.
We will send a letter to you advising you of your status and giving you an opportunity to provide proof of citizenship.
You will have until the Thursday prior to Election Day by 5:00 p.m. to provide proof of citizenship and be eligible to vote a full Arizona ballot.

List of acceptable documents to establish your citizenship

Arizona Driver’s License number or non-operating identification license number issued after 10/01/1996 (number only; DO NOT SEND IN THE CARD.)
A legible photocopy of a birth certificate that verifies United States Citizenship.
A legible photocopy of your United States Passport containing your name and Passport Number.
A legible photocopy of U.S. Naturalization documents or the Alien Registration Number that begins with the letter “A”. If only the number is provided, it will need to be verified before the voter registration can be processed.
A Bureau of Indian Affairs Card Number, Tribal Treaty Card Number, or Tribal Enrollment Number (number only; DO NOT SEND IN THE CARD.)
